247 Montée du Château, 73190 Challes-les-Eaux, France

Challes-les-Eaux is just south of Chambéry, a surprisingly beautiful town offering a lot to keep visitors occupied at any time of the year. The capital of Savoie has seen a tumultuous history, which has left behind medieval châteaux and grand townhouses, a uniquely decorated cathedral and impressive fountains (don’t miss the elephants). The town sits on flat plain nestled between Chartreuse and the Massif des Bauges, with mountains cradling it and providing endless opportunities for hiking, cycling (on and off road) and in season, winter sports. Shimmering just north of the town is Lac de Bourget, which offers further entertainment and a clutch of lovely restaurants around its shores.
